Noah is a Brooklyn-based photographer. He attracted our attention with one of his side projects – #bedmounds. He takes photographs of mountains of fabric left by sleeping humans, often found on unmade beds.

“Cheap motels do tend to provide great blankets and backdrops though.“

WHAT ARE YOU DOING DURING THE DAY?

I am a photographer and I live in New York. I specialize in landscape and portrait photography.  During the day, you can usually find me working on one of my numerous long term personal projects or thinking about why I am not working on one of my projects. I also sometimes take pictures for magazines and corporate clients.

ARE YOU AN EARLY BIRD?

I never thought I would be an early bird but I became one in my early 30’s. I love to make photographs in the fog around my home and that usually only lasts from sunrise to 9am. I will automatically wake up at 6am, look out the window and if it looks interesting I get up. If not, I’ll sleep a bit later.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND #BEDMOUNDS?

When we think of beds, we usually think of them as neatly made, waiting to be used. I wanted to undo that, to pull back the covers and sculpt a monumental shape out of the fabric where our bodies would be, and where our bodies have been, as both a still-life (of the materials of sleep) and a portrait (of someone's presence).

WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE #BEDMOUND?

I have no favorite bedmound since I believe all bedmounds are equal and beautiful. Cheap motels do tend to provide great blankets and backdrops though.

DO YOU GET ENOUGH SLEEP?

Yes, I think I get enough sleep. If I sleep too much it’s like I haven’t slept at all. So I try to limit myself to between 6 and 8 hours.  I think it’s important to be well rested if I have a shoot the next day but it’s less about total hours and more about overall comfort.

WHERE DO YOU SLEEP BEST?

I sleep best in my bed at my house upstate New York. I have a very hard time sleeping when I am in the city.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS BEFORE GOING TO BED?

Nothing fancy. I just brush my teeth and go to bed.

DESCRIBE YOUR BED IN 3 WORDS.

Firm, warm and white.

WHAT IS THE MOST SPECIAL SPOT YOU’VE EVER FALLEN ASLEEP.

I slept in a tree house 30 feet in the air during a rainstorm and it swayed in the wind. That was pretty special.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS WHILE WE SLEEP?

Your mind clears its cache.

HOW MANY SHEEP DO YOU COUNT?

I’ve never understood the counting sleep thing. I don’t like math in the bedroom.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DREAM ABOUT TONIGHT?

I don’t really feel comfortable talking about my dreams.
